The Challenge

S2 Global needed a complete redesign of their CertScan platform to support high-volume security operations across multiple user roles. The challenge: create a single, scalable system that delivers critical data at the right moments to enhance each role and its unique functions, balanced customization with strict protocols, and improved efficiency without compromising accuracy.

My Role

I owned the UX strategy & vision for this project, guiding a consistent quality among all designers' contributions, ensuring the business goals were met.

The Results

Designed a responsive, scalable platform for CertScan that unifies data visualizations and user workflows, boosting efficiency for inspectors worldwide. Introduced a visual language built for at-a-glance understanding, and innovative visuals connecting digital and physical worlds to reveal patterns, surface critical risk and bottleneck insights, and support faster decision-making. Now in global use and built to evolve with future S2 Global needs.

Discovery

More data & tools in one place ≠ faster, more confident decisions.

CertScan provides a vast feature set and access to data from layers of security devices and integrated databases. This power has resulted in a complex system suffering from lack of organization and prioritization.

Key issues found in the legacy platform

Tasks are split across pages, requiring unnecessary steps and navigation.

Buried information requires users to map their required procedures to the interface, navigating to relevant information to discover if data is normal or concerning.

Comparing information is not supported in the system forcing users to manually cross reference information across pages increasing cognitive load and potential for errors

Unclear organization, hierarchy, and system feedback makes it difficult to remember tool functions resulting in valuable tools going unused.

Misclicks caused by densely packed toolbars with small buttons, including critical actions with no differentiation from standard tools.

Approach to Design

Zeroed-In

It is crucial for CertScan users to stay focused on their critical responsibilities throughout their mentally-taxing and fast-paced workdays.

Task-based structure unique to each role

Tasks and log-ins are associated with roles, allowing unique workflows and visualizations, providing focus to critical information and next steps, and eliminating any unnecessary pages, elements, or tools.

Maluable

CertScan users vary by country, role, site, devices, and preferences. The system must adapt to these needs without losing its core value or usability, like Play-Doh, it should take many forms, but always feel familiar.

A modular framework

Use an atomic design approach starting with the visual language to create a consistent communication model that highlights important information, no matter the view. Visualizations can be combined into grids with purpose-driven zones, so the pages can adapt without compromising recognition.

Guided

The system needs to seamlessly lead users through task prioritization and completion, surfacing information at the optimal time within their workflows to reduce cognitive load, improve efficiency, and support confident decision-making.

at-a-glance attention & physical analogies

Guidance goes beyond workflows. Inject guidance into data visualizations by mirroring the physical inspection tasks, making the information quickly understandable and actionable. Add data emphasis and clear CTAs, to focus the user's attention, increasing efficiency and clarity.

Customization > simplicity

We aimed to simplify the system by highlighting key actions, but users prioritized control and customization. In response, we designed modular, ergonomic components optimized for cognitive processing and quick recognition, enabling fast, flexible interaction across any configuration.

Action-oriented platform with at-a-glance information that adapts for each role using a visual language inspired by the environment.

Building on familiar symbol and color usage, we created a library of visual elements to be used across all visualizations in the system to create a common meaning. The visualizations connect the digital data to physical structures in the inspection process, mirroring inspection lanes and site traffic flow, making the visual story easy to interpret. The visuals build on each other, so zooming in and out provides the appropriate granularity of data for the role and area of responsibility.

The Outcome

A system built to scale with users and technology

OSI Systems, the parent company to S2 Global, was recently awarded a $47 million contract to upgrade inspection systems with the CertScan software.
